Live Like a Local – The Shelburne Open House

The Shelburne hosted its first Client event where we had the opportunity to showcase our new rooms/suites.

The event was held on the 10th floor and had 75 top clients in attendance. The audience was a great mix of Corporate, Missions, Group, Travel agents and FIT Tour Operators.

The renovation was warmly received by all and the Mission of Denmark who left us last year due to product is excited about coming back for UNGA!

Besides seeing the renovated rooms the clients were so excited about the special activations we had which included a photo booth, relaxing massages by Oasis and Crystal Tarot Card readings by Modern Sanctuary.

All is all a really amazing evening!

The Surrey Manager Outing!

The Surrey Managers had a wonderful time yesterday during our paint event! It was held in a quaint spot called The Paint Place. We had the pleasure of painting banksy with a balloon while enjoying wine, cheese and charcuterie plates. A great time was had by all and we cannot wait for the next one!

The National Participates in the Grand Gourmet!

We The Dogs NYC – Yappy Hour Event

NYC’s Newest Dog Community launched last night at The Fifty Hotel & Suites, creatively titled Yappy Hour. It was an immensely successful event with adorable pups, flowing wine and great food! We The Dogs NYC is a Nonprofit Organization, supporting NYC area animal rescue organizations.


We can’t wait to host more Yappy Hour events across all Affinia Hotels in the future!

Boutique Design Magazine Write Up: Gardens Suites Hotel

Every year Boutique Design Magazine in conjunction with BDNY (Boutique Design New York) holds The Gold Key Awards for Excellence in Hospitality Design. It is the industry’s oldest and most prestigious awards program, and this past November Gardens Suites Hotel was a finalist in The Best Room Midscale Category. As always it is so nice to be nominated and be a finalist in the industry’s most prestigious awards ceremony.

The Benjamin team celebrated with a terrific Holiday lunch catered by our very own National restaurant. The food was amazing, the company was better. There was a wide assortment of raffle prizes and many happy winners. What a way to end our year!

A special shout out goes to Eleanor Carter, Director of Benefits for tirelessly working on getting our new benefits package and converting to the new insurance carrier. Additionally she had an expert on Social Security come in to educate associates eligible for Medicare on making the right decision on what is the best option for them. She is always looking out for the associates best interests.  Thank you Eleanor for all you do for us!

The James NoMad Sales & Marketing Team Volunteers

In the spirit of giving back and supporting our local community, on December 12th the James New York – NoMad Sales & Marketing Team volunteered to provide support to the Actors Theatre Workshop. The ATW provides New York City Homeless children with unique and life-changing experiences with a 12 week after school theatre and education program, The Builders of the New World. In conjunction with this program ATW hosts holiday celebrations for the children providing the opportunity to enjoy a nutritious meal, experience a drama class and receive a special holiday gift.

The James NoMad team assisted the theatre with the holiday celebration including, setting up for the party, decorating the theatre, serving food, joining in creative exercises with the children, and assisting with flyers and newsletter creation.

“Catch A Vibe” – The James NoMad

The James New York – NoMad welcomed top clients last night to “Catch a vibe” and indulge in the scene while paying homage to the prohibition past. Special performances included Ezinma and Najah Lewis. Prohibition activations included complimentary hand massages by Sundays with a special custom purple nail color takeaway, shoe shine station, and cigar girls passing out CBD edibles.

Thanksgiving Feast at Corporate!

Corporate associates enjoyed a great Thanksgiving Feast catered by Tommy Bahama Restaurant! We also had the joy of tasting Matt’s home made Eggnog that was definitely the rage of the event! A special thank you to our lovely Executive Assistants for coordinating everything and making all this fun possible.

Everyone Loves Training!

Recently the Corporate Operations Team hosted a two and a half day training session on “How to Train Associates on SOPs”.  The training was centered all around service and conducted by The Freeman Group, who assisted in putting together the company SOPs. Twelve managers from our six properties worked together on understanding our SOPs, how to train our associates on them, and most importantly how to keep our SOP Training ‘Alive’ each and every day!  Role-playing, coaching and fun was all part of this successful session and our ‘trainers’ are extremely excited to share their learning’s and to train at their properties! 

 

Shout Out for October!

A special Shout Out to Ryan Callahan  for his leadership and assistance in putting together all the corporate budgets for 2019.  Ryan patiently explained all the nuances of allocations and kept a tight control on payroll and operating expenses with all departments.  Ryan’s professionalism, patience and positive attitude sets the standard for how we do business at Denihan.  Thank you Ryan!

3rd Quarter Values Champion at The Benjamin!

The Benjamin enjoyed a great spread of Italian favorites during our 3rd Quarter Values Champion celebration. The winner for this quarter was Jennifer Moreno! Jennifer has been a true asset to our team, we are thankful she has assisted when we have been short at the front desk and is always happy to help her fellow peers. Jennifer has proven to be flexible and able to take on any and all tasks given to her. Congratulations again Jennifer!

3rd Quarter Values Champion at the Gardens NYC!

We celebrated our 3rd Quarter Values Champion at the Gardens with a delcious sandwich spread and desserts. The winner this quarter was Charles Boakye Yiadom! Charles is pleasant to work with and always has a big smile on his face, whether it is during interactions with guest or simply sitting in the cafeteria amongst coworkers. He is a great team player and truly deserved the honor of Values Champion!

There was exciting pumpkin carving contest this Halloween at the Benjamin. They celebrated October Birthdays and had sweet treats. Ali Rivera won the winning prize with his pumpkin. They all did such an amazing job. We love Halloween at the Benjamin!

 

The James NoMad – Halloween Hoopla!

The James New York NoMad celebrated Halloween early with their very first Halloween Hoopla event!! Team members competed against each other for the most baskets in under two minutes! There was an array of sweets and snacks for the spectators to enjoy while watching this intense competition get all the way to the final round! Juan Acosta and Cesar Cabrera were the winning team, taking home$100 and hotel bragging rights!!

Suite life gives Denihan scion an edge in hotel business

Since Chrissy Denihan was a little girl, she’s been around the family business of hotels and hospitality.

She grew up in the Lyden House hotel, a former property of the Denihan Hospitality Group’s portfolio that has since been transferred to Rockefeller University’s ownership.

During those formative years, she was exposed to the intricacies of a fast-evolving hotel industry in New York City.

Living in the Lyden House in Midtown East, Denihan absorbed everything from how the hotel’s guest service agents interacted with customers, to riding the elevators with those worldly customers who were experiencing New York for the first time.

“It’s an experience that can’t be measured,” Denihan said of her childhood. “It’s cool to see and it’s still one of my favorite things to do, to sit in the hotel lobby and watch the travelers and see how they experience our products.”

All that knowledge formed a solid foundation for her professional life. Denihan has worked for the family business for 12 years, the last of which was as vice president of asset management and development.

Currently, Denihan Hospitality Group owns and operates several luxury and boutique hotels in popular U.S. markets. Its varied collection includes The James hotels and the Affinia Hotel Collection, as well as independt outfits such as The Surrey and The Benjamin.

More recently, the company has been looking to focus more on the hotel management side of things and partnering with owners of independent, off-branded hotels.

Denihan said it’s a balancing act between ownership and management but that the company is looking to provide valuable experience in partnerships with smaller hotels.

With her executive title comes many responsibilities and Denihan has a hand in many different pies.

Her role includes managing everything from the company’s James Hotel in Washington, D.C. set to open in 2021, to the major renovation of the Shelburne Hotel at 303 Lexington Avenue under their Affinia brand in the city.

She’s also involved in the search for a food and beverage partner that matches each of their hotels, like Scarpetta at the James Hotel in NoMad, French restauranteur Daniel Boulud’s Boulud Café Boulud at The Surrey in the Upper East Side and celebrity chef Geoffrey Zakarian’s The National Bar at their Benjamin Hotel in Midtown East.

More simply, she’s responsible for making sure all of the company’s hotels perform to their highest potential, bring in the most money they can and keep their customers happy and returning.

Looking forward, Denihan said that the company is interested in other markets. Like their D.C. expansion, she said there are a few opportunities to expand their James Hotel line, whether it’s in New York or across the nation and North America.

Despite being tasked with all these duties, Denihan said it’s an exciting time for the hospitality sector. In the last decade or so, she explained that traveling has evolved and with it, their customers.

“The market and the style in which hotels and lifestyle boutiques are used has changed so much,” Denihan said. “People are using social spaces more than they were a decade ago.”

Denihan added that travelers are more interested in experiential travel, looking for experiences with their lodging and finding the right restaurant to dine in.

The VP added that the hospitality industry in New York can expect a coming tailwind as with several major projects coming online. Denihan said that with Hudson Yards, Manhattan West, Moynihan Station and JP Morgan redeveloping their new headquarters, she’s expecting a great deal of visitors and attention on New York City.

To capture that coming crowd, Denihan has put her faith in her family business’ model. To separate themselves from the crowd of luxury hotels, she pointed to the values she learned over time with her family that have found their way into the company’s operations.

From her childhood time spent in one of the hotels, to working in the family business for more than a decade, she said there are certain things that can’t be taught.

“Growing up in the hotels, you realize it’s about the human connection,” Denihan said. “We all know how to run different operations and look at different projections, but I think that something that is not always taught is the human connection.”

Denihan said that they prioritize how their employees treat their guests, how well they work with one another, and how they look to provide a real experience to those staying at their hotels.

“The one thing that really sets us apart is really just being honest and candid with one another,” Denihan said of her family. “I think that trickles throughout our entire [company] culture.”

The Surrey’s Awesome Housekeeping Week!

The Surrey team kicked off Housekeeping Week with a delicious breakfast! We had the pleasure of enjoying West Indian food made by our very own Housekeeping Manager, Andrea Giddings. On Wednesday, everyone tried their luck in a raffle and many had the chance to win great prizes! Along with the raffle, we also gave al team members a cute little succulent to show our appreciation to them. They all enjoyed Thursday’s lunch of pizza and wings! We ended off the week with a wrap up breakfast and massages courtesy of our Spa Director, Desiree Miranda. A Thank you bag was handed to them upon departure. What an awesome week we all had!

  

The Garden’s Housekeeping Week!

The Gardens hotel enjoyed a great Housekeeping Week! They started the week with their favorite Donuts and Coffee, the following day that had a delicious spread of Mediterranean Cuisine. On Wednesday they all enjoyed a do it yourself Sundae bar. Sparkling water Thursday was a nice way to cool down the humidity of the week. We ended all festivities with a hearty breakfast of champs for our Team! They all received a Thank you bag and a water bottle as well! Thanks for the support Gardens housekeeping team!

The Benjamin’s Fantastic Housekeeping Week!

The Benjamin hotel enjoyed a fantastic Housekeeping Week! We started the week with a delicious Breakfast followed by a relaxing Tuesday full of treats and massages for our Kings and Queens. Wednesday they received a precious succulent and got tons and tons of gift cards for a lot of yummy places to eat. We continued the week with and amazing lunch from our very own Chef Rezart who created a spectacular meal for them to enjoy. We ended the week with a sundae bar and a fun game of Bingo with lots and lots of raffle prizes such as a Gift cards, TV, Nespresso machine, and $100.00 gift card. They all received a handy Thank you bag, a water bottle, and a housekeeping survival kit. What a week!!
