The entire crew has been hard at work preparing for our warm weather guests and we look forward to offering them our Surrey bikes to explore all that the UES has to offer. Guests will have the option to borrow our bikes and helmets so that they can ride through the neighborhood or picnic in the park.
Cheers to Spring!
For our February Shout Out, we would like to recognize the following individuals for their quick response to the flood we had in our corporate offices on February 25. John Allen was the first to respond to a call from Ian, the IT on- call person, that our file server was down in the main office. John arrived Saturday evening to discover that there was a major flood coming from the 11th floor of the building into our offices including the IT server room and the Design and Construction space. He reached out to Muhamad Ahmad who arrived faster than a speeding bullet and activated the crisis protocols. A remediation company was immediately brought in to vacuum up the water from the carpet and wood floors and worked to remove the wet ceiling tiles and parts of the sheetrock. Since the cleanup, Muhamad has been instrumental in meeting with Denihan and the building’s insurance adjusters and received approval from the building to restore the spaces quickly by using our contractors. The Design and Construction area is almost complete and ready to be moved into momentarily.
Thank you Muhamad for your tireless leadership and drive to keep us functioning throughout all this with minimum disruption for all!
(John Allen) (Muhamad Ahmad)
We would like to recognize the Transition Teams working on James Weho and Carlton for all of their efforts over December and January.

The James West Hollywood team was all hands on deck during the Recruitment Fair last week! We teamed up with SBE to source top talent for our upcoming opening. Over two days The James team members interviewed over 100 candidates and we were thrilled with who we met! The excitement and buzz around our new property was strongly felt over the two days we spoke with eager candidates. Over the next two weeks we will continue to meet with candidates and finalize those that have moved forward after our event. Look out West Hollywood, The James will soon be the best property in town with the best team members in town!

We would like to congratulate and thank our winner of the August Shout out – our very own Director of Corporate Facilities, Muhamad Ahmad! Muhamad has a very diverse workload. Besides being responsible for overseeing our office and ensuring that the physical plants at the hotels run smoothly, he also offers his expertise in finding and mentoring our onsite Directors of Engineering. He has gained the trust and respect of our new partners at the Carlton through his dedication and hard work. He also heads up the facilities team that does a great job looking after the office. He ably covered for Henryk and Eileen during vacation season to ensure all associates received continued uninterrupted services. Most recently he was responsible for upselling and closing on a lucrative Verizon lease at the Gardens NYC. Congratulations and thank you Muhamad for all you do for us.
(Muhamad with Declan)
We would also like to recognize several other associates for the month of August….

Dumont NYC kicked off Housekeeping Week with a full hot breakfast. On Day 2, the team participated in a scavenger hunt that guided them through the guest rooms, down to the Housekeeping Office and into the locker rooms in order to find the clues and win. Incredible collaboration between Corporate, the Benjamin hotel team, National restaurant team, Marketing+styling teams, & Catering made this a memorable night for our clients.
The Front Office Team at Dumont NYC received this special gift and note from a guest. Always making the guest feel at home, the Dumont Team goes above and beyond to make sure the guest’s stay is a memorable one. Thank you and keep up the great work.
The Dumont NYC and The Carlton Hotel hosted and celebrated their 2016 summer outing together! Both teams headed to Forest Lodge in N.J. for a full day of fun in the sun! Jon, Maria, Gary, with the help of Pedro, Anubha and the Surrey Team hosted our Annual Event for some of Denihan’s top clients at The Surrey. Clients included the travel managers / CEOs from JP Morgan, Viacom, World Travel Inc, CBS, Ralph Lauren, BOA, Jefferies, McKinsey and AIG to name a few… The caliber and level of attendees was a true testament to the relationship our teams have built. Special shout out to Carl, Simon and Steve for stellar presentations and engaging with our clients. Selling we are a family business and having family present at these type of events is one way we differentiate ourselves from our competition. The bar, rooftop, art tour, presidential suite and a private dinner at Cafe Boulud made for a memorable night!
Great Job Team!
Dumont NYC kicked off Memorial Day weekend with cool treats in a fresh cafeteria.
The refresh of the cafeteria includes: Art work representing each country of our associates, newly painted walls with two new color, and new kitchen appliances.
Happy Memorial Day to all our fellow Denihan associates.
On Wednesday May 18th, we donated 60 lockers left over from our Spa which closed a few years ago. With the help of Great Forest we located a school in Maspeth Queens, Martin Luther School, who was willing to take the lockers off of our hands. Their plan is to give the lockers a face lift so their students have a place to store their books which they currently do not have.
The Gardens NYC team took up a competitive game of Putt-Putt at Randall’s Island yesterday. We enjoyed 36 holes of Mini Golf, Bean Bag Toss, Giant Connect-Four and Jenga!
The team relaxed and enjoyed the weather with fabulous food and pitchers of beer!
We even had 6 hole-in-ones!
On Monday evening the 2014 Hotel Excellence Awards (HEA) program was held at Cipriani Wall Street and hosted by Where® IN New York—in cooperation with the Hotel Association of New York City, Inc. and the New York City Association of Hotel Concierges. The HEA program recognizes the qualities and characteristics that define superior service and achievement in New York City’s hospitality industry. The Surrey was the recipient of both the Best Room Amenities and Best Overall Hotel Experience award for hotels with fewer than 500 guest rooms. Last Friday, the Affinia marketing team held a corporate red wine hour for associates to share in the spirit of the #GoRed activations on property by mixing, mingling and learning how to keep hearts strong.
Affinia Hotel Collection teamed up with the American Heart Association and their Go Red for Women campaign throughout the month of February to raise awareness for heart disease, educate the corporate team on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and discuss the heart-healthy benefits of red wine and dark chocolates served during the event.
#GoRed wine hours have been popping up at the Affinia hotels over the last few weeks in an effort to bring this same heart awareness to our guests. Guests stocked up on those heart healthy antioxidants at each property, enjoying red wine and dark chocolate at Dumont NYC, Shelburne NYC, Fifty NYC and Manhattan NYC, fresh berries and water at Gardens NYC, and sparkling blood orange juice at Liaison Capitol Hill DC.
Affinia also created custom #GoRed postcards for guests/associates to fill out and send to their loved ones to let them know “I heart your heart.” Guests entrusted our team members to then send their postcards all over the world.
The #GoRed activation ends on February 28th, so there are only a few days left for you to share the love with those you care about – don’t forget to send them a postcard or you can send the digital version of the postcard here.
We heart your hearts,
The Affinia Marketing team

The fight against cancer goes on. In today’s society everyone knows someone who has been touched by breast cancer. Whether it’s a friend or relative, someone in your circle has battled breast cancer.
The Komen Race for the Cure is a community event that honors and memorializes breast cancer survivors, co-survivors and those that have lost their battle to the disease. The Race also plays a vital role in raising funds for research, education, prevention, advocacy and treatment. Each year over 1.7 million people take part in Race for the Cure events around the world. The James Royal Palm was joined by hundreds of others last Friday October 18th at Bayfront Park.
This year, Housekeeping week at the Manhattan was such a blast that we are still looking at the pictures and replaying videos. Along with the below activities we had tons of food, dessert, massages and a festive vibe all-around.
Some of the memorable activities included:
As you can see from the photos and video below, our team had such a fantastic time that we cannot wait for next year.
From September 11 – 14, The James Royal Palm along with the Denihan National Sales team hosted a Client Advisory Retreat for sixteen meeting planners from around the country. We had the opportunity to showcase our beautiful South Beach property while gaining key market knowledge and beneficial, in-depth feedback from the group. Throughout the weekend, the group participated in a series of fun, interactive programming with an AMAZING Race, including selfie-picture taking, empanada making, and yoga posing throughout the property, as well as a roundtable discussion where the group was given the opportunity to discuss best practices, The James Royal Palm’s strongest differentiators, and exchange industry information. Lastly, it wouldn’t have been a true Miami experience without giving the group the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture, so we were sure to treat them to a Little Havana Walking Tour & Catamaran, where we took the opportunity not only to show off The James Royal Palm but to also sell Miami as a destination.
A big thank you to Brad Cirino, Danielle Inzano and The James Royal Palm sales team for their preparation and dedication to this initiative, as well as Mike Shaff, Becky Casey, Rachel Mecca, and Sherri Kaufman for hosting such an influential weekend where we successfully continued to build partnerships and strengthen relationships.
Below are some images from the Retreat, enjoy!
The Affinia Manhattan Management Team enjoyed a NYC Scavenger Hunt followed by a reception at the James Soho. Managers had to employ strategy and teamwork in order to the make it to the end, and the winning team enjoyed prizes! What a wonderful way for management to bond and enjoy the landmarks the city has to offer!
Yesterday we held our annual all associate event in our little known gem called Suite 2901. DJ Rob was spinning turntables and our fabulous management team and GM, were working hard on the grill. While our GM, Alex Spektor, and Director of Banquets, Franklyn Polonia competed for the “skirt-steak throw-down,” associates indulged in their well-deserved feast and danced away on the terrace! Raffle giveaways + good food + good company = ALL SMILES 🙂
Thank you to our awesome team for your hard work and commitment on a daily basis. Thank you to our management team for assisting in making this event a success. We hope everyone enjoyed the event and many more to come!
P.S.: We challenge Franklyn and Alex for another “BBQ Throw-down” simply because we all couldn’t get enough of both of your yummy steaks 🙂
In the spirit of Awareness, the Dumont has engaged in some friendly competition for a good cause. It all started when our Guest Experience Coordinator, Abraham Rodriguez, challenged both Stephanie Fernandez (Guest Service Agent) and Juber Rahman (Bell/Door) to complete the Ice Bucket Challenge in less than 24 hours or donate $100 to ALS. After they accepted the challenge, they nominated our very own General Manager, Jennifer Baldwin, to complete the challenge.
Guess what…challenge accepted!!
Affinia Manhattan houses a little known gem called Suite 2901. This suite, sitting atop the building features a wrap-around terrace that has breathtaking views of New York City and New Jersey. With our brand new and creative team, we’ve been asking ourselves ‘What else can we do’ with Suite 2901 considering that it has so much potential? And what we came up with were ideas for a variety of events that showcase this beautiful gem. On Thursday, we hosted a site inspection with numerous planners and conference managers from the area. After they toured Affinia Manhattan and other hotels from our collection, they were very impressed with our products as well as our hospitality, sending thank you notes stating: “Thank you for sharing your beautiful hotel with us and thank you for all of the amazing hospitality.” Thought we’d share with you some of the stunning views the planners fell in love with.
The James Royal Palm celebrated Q2 with a Team Member Town Hall!
It was also the OZ principles graduation day as only 9 team members are left to train from 298 Active team members! All team members raised an OZ..car in celebration of this great achievement.
The JAT team also welcomed Nestor Marchand our new F&B Director with some welcoming interview questions and continued our new tradition of a Jimmy Fallon inspired activity. The JAT team hosted a lip singing contest: PC against JAT team members …
Team members of the month and Manager of the Quarter winners were also announced Michael Mancini- Pantry for April, Kensley Pierre Server Assistant for May, Michael Hernandez Lobby/Door Assistant June and MOQ winner was Elisa Mejia.
Congrats to all the winners!
enjoy the view!
This year again, with the help of Denihan Network Advocates, Denihan associates got in the celebratory spirit with delivered goody bags filled with U.S. flag pins and patriotic themed sweet treats including I<3 USA lollipops, cotton candy and patriotic striped mints. As you can see, everyone loved the treats and proudly displayed their patriotic pride with the flags.
In order to make this event a huge hit, a lot of people came together to make it happen – a few of them deserving very special thanks: Matt Norman-thank you, thank you for such seamless support and making this possible; Cindy Johnson-as always, she just makes things happen J; Jackie Elbaidouri-my go-to lady with her creative ideas and get-it-done spirit; and of course, Chrissy Denihan-for endlessly supporting DNA and all of our efforts! Thank you to our entire DNA team and property HRD’s who continually volunteer their time and efforts to keep our prized Denihan culture alive!
The Benjamin held it’s quarterly All Associate meeting today- Cinco de Mayo style!
With some yummy guacamole, empanadas and “margaritas” courtesy of The National’s culinary team, associates celebrated our Values Champions and Manager of the Quarter, recognized our 17 point TripAdvisor improvement over last quarter (!!!), showcased some of our ongoing projects and 2014 goals, and played Benjamin trivia for some great prizes…oh yeah and everyone got a kick out of seeing their department heads in festive sombreros! 😉
It is with sadness but overjoyed happiness to post the promotional celebrations that our Director of Housekeeping, Frances Castro, received from the Dumont Team as she moves on to the Affinia Manhattan.
Our housekeeping team took it upon themselves to plan and host a Potluck Lunch Celebration as their personal thanks for all the hard work and commitment Frances has put for her team.
Congratulations Frances, the best of luck on your next step up!!!
Yesterday the entire management team at Affinia 50 took a stroll down The Yellow Brick Road and found themselves in The Land of Oz!
The training was facilitated by Jackie Violette (HR Director), Lupe Olmos-Galasso (Director of Rooms), Linda Mo (Director of Housekeeping) and Danielle Lim (Office Manager).
The team had the opportunity to learn The Oz Principle, to brainstorm ways to be personally accountable, and to finally learn what the heck the Executive Team means when we toss around the terms “above the line” and “below the line” in our meetings!
On Tuesday, the Dumont hosted it’s first Townhall Meeting of the year with our new General Manager – Jennifer Baldwin. There was a lot of built up excitement and curiosity from our staff on all the new changes and faces at the hotel. In keeping with the new spirit at Corporate of the departments now sitting in pods based on the hotel, the staff was was graced with the presence of our new extended team. Our new Hotel Group Controller – Thomas Lyon, our new Director of Revenue Management – Barbara Brown, our new Marketing Manager – Timothy Devlin, and our new Director of Human Resources (and co-Townhall presenter) – Regina Yorio, all came by to personally meet the team. We all gathered and enjoyed each others company as we all learned of our future projects and prospects. We even held a surprise giveaway to two lucky team members, Carlos Santos winning a two night stay at the Liasion, and Shonda Colbourne winning a one night stay at the Affinia 50. And did I forget to mention the delicious breakfast we had…
When will the snow end?? For the time being, the Affinia Dumont will not be deterred from providing the excellent service it provides because of the snow. During last week’s storm we treated our staff to lunch, on us! By the looks of how much the staff enjoyed the lunch and with the never ending snow, it looks like another lunch will be right around the corner!
CALLING ALL TEAM MEMBERS!
We are excited to invite you to participate in a special internal communication initiative: Denihan’s 50th Celebration Story Portrait Project.
We want to celebrate 50 years by celebrating EACH of you.
The project aims to gather the unique stories of our diverse team member community; stories that make up an important part of our history as a company dedicated to the Art of Hospitality.
Your story, and those of your colleagues, will be shared with on Denihan Chitchat throughout 2014.
So how do you share your story? It’s easy. Take this simple survey by Monday, January 27th.
In the meantime, please feel free to reach out to Chrissy Denihan O’Donovan if you have any questions about the project.
We do hope you’ll contribute your unique story as part of our 50th Celebration. We’d be thrilled to hear from you.
The Affinia Manhattan Management Team gathered on Thursday evening to celebrate the New Year, enjoy a fine dinner and bond with one another. We had a great turnout, lively conversations, loads of fun and everyone present is super-excited about the successes we are eager to achiever this year! A big thank you to all our Managers who made it! We all look forward to a very successful 2014!!!
The winter storm blasted the Tri-State area overnight with freezing temperatures, high winds and yes, lots of snow! It was the first snow storm of 2014-and the Affinia Manhattan teams were prepared to take it on! With some sandwiches on hand, the team enjoyed a satisfying lunch and later bundled up to clear all of the snow that had accumulated. If their warm smiles are any indication, our team definitely enjoyed this memorable day.
Here’s a little peek into what went on behind the scenes to create the winter wonderland that was the 2013 Denihan Holiday Party and 50th Anniversary Celebration!
Building the ice sculpture that was custom created for us by Okamoto Studio – the same ice artist who created the ice sculpture garden that was on display in the Urban Garden at The James New York last winter.
Such an incredible piece, right? The 50th celebration moniker was surrounded by the city skyline for some added drama!
Assembling the mountain of parting gifts! Denihan 50th celebration chocolate medallions sitting below the signed Denihan poster from the town hall meetings.
Oneca trying to wrangle the balloons for the 50th step and repeat! The homemade 50th step and repeat featured a collection of images of team members from the past and through the present.
Thanks to everyone for such a fun, beautiful and delicious party! Stay on the lookout for more party pics…coming soon!
Yesterday was the perfect day for our Urban Garden photoshoot at The James New York. Showcasing the best of the garden, photographer James Baigrie captured some amazing shots of the new pillar artwork by Molly Dilworth, the beautiful greenery by our horticulturalist Rebecca Cole and some great reception/dining shots to showcase our unique outdoor dining space.
Special shout-outs to: Betsey Moser for the prep and beautiful styling; Karen Whittey our Creative Art Director; Claudia Del Greco our Marketing & PR Manager, Slavka Kmec our Director of Catering and Ron Cadiz who oversaw the David Burke team and helped make sure the restaurant space looked great as well.
And of course to our amazing hotel team Libby Snyder, Lirio Chavez, Bob Cisternino and Abel Cartagena (in town this week from The James Chicago) who made sure all ran smoothly from the hotel/operational side.
Here’s a few behind the scenes from our shoot….
And yesterday Yvette Stores, a GSA at the A50, epitomized that statement! Rather than allowing her guests to wait around for the next available doorman on a hectic Saturday morning, Yvette came out from behind the desk and took to the streets to hail a cab!
Let’s all take a cue from Yvette and remember that customer service really is all of our jobs!
Sometimes the smallest gestures make the biggest impression on our guests. Simply by observing and listening we can make the vital connection and create a memory. This letter was forwarded to us by the Corporate Sales and Marketing team.
Kudos to all team members involved and Thank you for being so guest centric!
“I just wanted to send a quick thank you to the James Hotel in Chicago. My wife and I were married yesterday and stayed the night in your hotel. Upon arrival (around 5pm) a very friendly, younger women, slender, brown hair (sorry didn’t get her name) and without prior knowledge of our wedding, upgraded our room to a suite. Then when we ordered room service later in the evening we received a free bottle of champagne, dessert and a nice note signed by several staff members. It was completely unexpected and a wonderful surprise. I can’t remember the last time a hotel went out of their way to make us feel special and we really appreciate it. You’ve earned a customer for life and will be seeing us on our anniversary for years to come. Thank you very much.”
It’s not over yet, but here’s a glimpse of our sensational Housekeeping Week 🙂
It started out as a simple conversation between our Director of Rooms, Liz St. James, and our GSA, Jean Paul Barbier, as Liz was eating lasagna for lunch. Jean Paul mentioned that he makes very good lasagna not knowing that the lasagna Liz was having for lunch was home-made (by her). It quickly escalated to a friendly competition: whose lasagna was better. Liz challenged JP to a lasagna bake-off where the Affinia Dumont associates would taste test and vote whose lasagna they liked better. And today that exactly happened. JP and Liz spent hours preparing lasagna last night so they can have it ready for today. They both bravely brought their creations to work today and in the afternoon it was on!! Associates were invited to a taste test after which they officially voted, and their votes were tallied up. As you can see there were some tense moments as we had a tie for a minute, but ultimately Liz received the final deciding vote. Liz’s lasagna was praised for being highly presentable in a glass dish and for having a good traditional flavor. But JP’s lasagna was not far behind with a hearty rich meaty flavor and plenty of cheesy goodness. As it turns out a small friendly challenge turned into a huge success for our entire team! We look forward to many more bake and cook-offs, starting with appetizers all the way to dessert! Can’t wait!
By Leslie Wolf and John Bradway
How does a complimentary glass of wine (or two) sound? Well, now Affinia Hotels in NYC are inviting our guests to enjoy a complimentary wine hour to start their nights off right. Affinia Shelburne kicked off the first Evening Libations in true Affinia style – complete with vino games, fun peace sign wine stoppers and of course our bartenders who have unique talents beyond the pour (shout out to Micaela, Jeff, Jada and Oneca who helped make sure the first wine hour went off without a hitch).
Evening libations is a great opportunity for Affinia guests to relax, socialize and unwind during their stay. We are thrilled to have launched Evening Libations so far at Affinia Shelburne, Affinia Dumont, Affinia 50 and most recently Affinia Manhattan (thanks Vanessa and Oscar for serving the first wine hour at AM!)
So far, guests are loving it and our Trip Advisor and Market Metrix scores are starting to reflect it! We can’t wait to see how the program evolves and look forward to having our guests continue to come sip, chat and be merry.

Last Friday Abraham Bermudez, Anne Marie Wilson, Juliana Velcic and I joined 400 plus other Travel Industry associates in a clean up project at Coney Island…….
All of us worked tirelessly through the heat and helped the New York City Parks Department, National Park Service, New York Aquarium and the Alliance for Coney Island to:
• Paint 200 lampposts along the Coney Island Boardwalk
• Paint fences, murals, playground equipment and more – using 120+ gallons of paint
• Plant nearly 140 plants at area playgrounds in Brooklyn
• Erect more than a 1,000ft of dune fencing at Fort Tilden Beach
• Move 4,500 cubic feet of sand, helping to clear the roadway into Fort Tilden Beach
At the end of the day, all the volunteers donated more than $60,000 in volunteer labor to the City of New York – we are so proud of what we all accomplished!
The Affinia Manhattan successfully completed a photo shoot of our NEW meeting Space! Here are some shots of the team preparing! WE ARE SO PROUD!
Posted by Regina Yorio, on behalf of Jamarious Falero, Lobby Assistant at the James New York about his first few days with Denihan:
“Starting at The James Hotel… it has easily been the smoothest transition I have ever experienced. In just a couple of days my job has been clearly defined and the steps taken to lead to my success are there; I need only to climb them. And I won’t have to climb it alone!!! I have received support not only from my own department but from the entire James team. A team that I am honored and privileged to say I am a part of”.
The revenue team missed Nancy Padolina so much they decided to have a bit of fun decorating desk for a proper welcome back after maternity leave!
This morning orientation for new hires at The James New York was completed! After the new team members familiarized themselves with the James traits we conducted a tour of the hotel. The rooftop pool , one of the most popular spots within the hotel, was the must- see spot of the tour, and was where this picture above was taken.
From left to right, the new team members are Rene Rodriguez, Bonnie Jin, Jamarious Falero, and Cameron Riera. Both Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Riera will be supporting the front desk and concierge, while Mr. Falero will be assisting with attending the lobby and guests. Ms. Jin is a hotel operations intern, and is currently participating in a rotational internship.
Upon completion of the tour of the hotel and the orientation, these new team members will be ready to start their journey at The James New York!
