The James New York + Artist Bobby Hill Celebrate the Seasonal Opening of The Urban Garden #artatthejames

On May 12th, The James New York celebrated the seasonal re-opening of the multi-tiered Urban Garden. To highlight the scenery of this artistically-inspired outdoor space, we tapped local artist Bobby Hill, to create live artwork during a cocktail party for media and local clients/partners. The tables at The Garden by David Burke Kitchen were open to the public during the event and featured special menu items inspired by Hill’s art for guests to enjoy as they overlooked the artwork on display. #artatthejames

On January 22nd, 2015, The James unveiled a new public art installation, “Slow Dance and the Daylight” by Brooklyn based artist Paul Wackers. In keeping with The James brand’s longstanding commitment to art and support of local communities we are very excited to be featuring his work on property as a gift to the neighborhood and the art community. When asked to describe the meaning of this original piece, Paul responded, “it is meant to establish a sense of familiarity in a seemingly impersonal city.” Painting the mural took about one month, but the project has been in the works for nearly 6 months and was completed in partnership with Grey Area, a creative consulting company.

The mural is now part of our permanent collection, so come by anytime and enjoy a look at the piece on the exterior of the building on 6th Avenue. Image of the mural uploaded to Instagram or Twitter that include the hashtag #jamespublicart will be shared to, creating a digital space for moments captured by guests, locals and visitors.

Welcome James New York New Team Members!!!

photoThis morning orientation for new hires at The James New York was completed! After the new team members familiarized themselves with the James traits we conducted a tour of the hotel. The rooftop pool , one of the most popular spots within the hotel, was the must- see spot of the tour, and was where this picture above was taken.

From left to right, the new team members are Rene Rodriguez, Bonnie Jin, Jamarious Falero, and Cameron Riera. Both Mr. Rodriguez and Mr. Riera will be supporting the front desk and concierge, while Mr. Falero will be assisting with attending the lobby and guests. Ms. Jin is a hotel operations intern, and is currently participating in a rotational internship.

Upon completion of the tour of the hotel and the orientation, these new team members will be ready to start their journey at The James New York!

The Great Outdoors

I know this past weekend was not the official start to summer, but when the sun finally came out on Memorial Day, it sure felt like it. As I was dragging my grill out and getting my outdoor furniture ready for the new season, I was thinking about how enjoyable it is spending time outdoors with family and friends. It reminded me of what we do at Denihan Hospitality, and how fortunate we have made a business out of it.

We’ve taken the simple joy of a backyard barbecue, of sipping cool drinks on a hot day with close friends and family, and brought it to our amazing restaurants and bars in Chicago, New York, Washington D.C. and South Beach.

From the patio at Art and Soul at The Liaison in Washington D.C. to the breathtaking views from the Rooftop Garden at The Surrey in New York, we provide the perfect backdrop for guests to share food, drinks and fun. We’ve partnered with some of the world’s most decorated chefs and innovative nightclub operators to help change the perception of the hotel restaurant and bar, from boring and plain to innovative and iconic. Our outdoor venues are a prime example.

Art and Soul- Patio 3

We could not have done it without Sims Foster, our vice president of restaurants & bars, who has brought a whole new dimension to our Art of Hospitality. He has helped Denihan build out an impressive restaurant and bar platform that will fuel future expansion.

Surrey Rooftop

I hope everyone was able to enjoy Memorial Day weekend and share some time outside with friends and family. I’m sure our guests did, thanks to Sims, his incredible team and all of you working to make it happen.

The “Art of Hospitality”

Sometimes it’s the little things that make you realize what a great business we are in. Last week, out of the blue, a package was delivered to the corporate office. Inside was a beautifully wrapped box from Tiffany’s.

Tiffany Box

A stunning crystal gift was inside with a touching note from Brack Capital Real Estate. The note thanked us for our “hard work and dedication in creating one of New York’s finest hotels.”
Tiffany Group Image

It was a complete and wonderful surprise from the developers we partnered with to build and create The James New York in SoHo. We teamed with BRCE to design the hotel and launch it to unprecedented heights, with quick market penetration and great press accolades. We built fantastic restaurant and bar solutions that have won over not only hotel guests, but also the local crowd who have so many other fantastic choices nearby.

The hotel opened in January of 2010 when the economy was still teetering between recession and recovery. We accomplished a quick stabilization through a very turbulent market with strong profit margins, all the while creating a wonderful experience in SoHo. The hotel earned many honors, including one as impressive as making Condé Nast’s Hot List.

All of that allowed our partner, BRCE, the developer, to sell the property earlier this month for $85 million! Issac Hera, Brack’s CEO, called The James “one-of-a-kind” in the press release announcing the sale, saying it had “not only met our goals, but exceeded expectations.”

We, too, are delighted to have helped create one of New York’s greatest hotels and are excited to partner with the new buyer, one of the highest quality institutions on the planet.

The strong performance of the hotel was due to the combined efforts of brand management, public relations, and the operations team working together with the property team. It takes an incredible amount of advanced planning to pull that off, but we have unbelievably experienced members on our team who have done this many times before.

With an impressive foundation like that to create our “Art of Hospitality,” it is amazing what we can accomplish. I want to give special thanks again to the property team for some incredible work, the corporate teams for truly supporting the effort and the development team for finding the deal originally and then the new buyer.

The gift was a lovely thank you from a great partner, but it is an even better reminder of what we do here at Denihan. It is not just the hotel business to us, it is The Art of Hospitality.

That’s crystal clear.

“Pool Party” at James New York

Although the weather did not cooperate, it certainly did not dampen the team spirit at the James New York at their Annual Pool Party this week! Dancing shoes replaced bathing suits as the group enjoyed great music, delicious food and raffle prizes on the Roof. Teamwork was evident as the smiles and laughter of the James New York associates brightened up an otherwise gloomy day here in New York. Great Job Team!072066
