Maria Skalka’s Retirement Party- Shelburne NYC

Maria retirement

March 30th was a bittersweet day at Shelburne NYC as Maria Skalka retired. To celebrate her many years of service, we hosted a retirement party filled with food, laughter and memories. Maria will be missed, and we wish her well in her next adventure. Her hard work, dedication and positive attitude are some of the precious things she has shared with us for many years! With retirement comes new horizons and we hope that she enjoys every second of her new found freedom.

Creating a Better Life- Thupten Sherab’s Story

Dumont CC 1Dumont cc 2

Thupten Sherab, an associate from Dumont NYC, traveled to India and worked with the Monks to build a center for the elderly. During his visit he was able to build new homes and create a senior center. In addition, in each of the 5 villages Thupten visited, he took on projects such as upgrading solar lighting and bathroom conversions to western toilets. Here in New York, Thupten opened his own center for the elderly Tibetan community called the Himalayan Elders Project for which he received the below recognition.

Happy Mardi Gras from Gardens NYC

King cakes are a holiday tradition around the world, including the celebration of Twelfth Night and Carnival.  Each community has its own recipe variations and symbolic interpretations.  In the United States, a plastic baby is baked inside of the cake, and the person who receives the slice with the baby in it is said to have good luck.  The cake is topped with icing and three colored sugars that represent justice (purple), faith (green), and power (gold).

Town Hall Meeting – Marshmallow Challenge!

We recently held a Town Hall Meeting to update all our associates on the latest news at the Liaison! It was also the perfect opportunity to do a team building exercise called the Marshmallow Challenge so that we can move forward with 2 important lessons: Prototyping Matters (we can learn from failures!) and Diverse Skills Matter! As you can see below, our team truly enjoyed the session. It goes to say there is nothing better than having fun while learning and bonding with each other! 🙂

A “safe bet “at Shelburne NYC

Have you noticed the NY State Troopers at Grand Central and Penn station since October last year? They are here as part of the increased security in our great city and best of all, they are staying at Shelburne NYC.

Every six days since late October 2014, 32 new Troopers from all corners of the Empire State  rotate at the hotel, much to hotel guests, neighborhood residents and passersby delight and curiosity and perhaps some concerns,  to see 64 Troopers arriving and leaving at the same time, with their official cars double parked and flashing lights. We are very thankful for over 3,000 room nights booked YTD to the end of June, and hope they continue to stay with us and keep us safe. Thank you James for bringing us this business through Freedom Hospitality.

HEAF- Harlem Educational Activities Fund, was developed to provide Harlem educators with private resources to enhance student outcomes and school effectiveness. The benefit brought in a total of $14,795– great job team!

Denihan Celebrates #GoRed!

Last Friday, the Affinia marketing team held a corporate red wine hour for associates to share in the spirit of the #GoRed activations on property by mixing, mingling and learning how to keep hearts strong.

Affinia Hotel Collection teamed up with the American Heart Association and their Go Red for Women campaign throughout the month of February to raise awareness for heart disease, educate the corporate team on the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and discuss the heart-healthy benefits of red wine and dark chocolates served during the event.

#GoRed wine hours have been popping up at the Affinia hotels over the last few weeks in an effort to bring this same heart awareness to our guests. Guests stocked up on those heart healthy antioxidants at each property, enjoying red wine and dark chocolate at Dumont NYC, Shelburne NYC, Fifty NYC and Manhattan NYC, fresh berries and water at Gardens NYC, and sparkling blood orange juice at Liaison Capitol Hill DC.

Affinia also created custom #GoRed postcards for guests/associates to fill out and send to their loved ones to let them know “I heart your heart.”  Guests entrusted our team members to then send their postcards all over the world.

The #GoRed activation ends on February 28th, so there are only a few days left for you to share the love with those you care about –  don’t forget to send them a postcard or you can send the digital version of the postcard here.

We heart your hearts,

The Affinia Marketing team

A Thanksgiving Message from Brooke and Patrick

With Thanksgiving fast approaching, we reflect upon friends, family and associates for whom we are the most grateful.  It is in the spirit of ‘family’ that we send all of you our thanks.

Know that we are reminded not just this time of year, but every single day that it is all of you who provide the magic that makes Denihan a special company.

Thank you for collaborating daily on balancing the needs of our guests with the many other necessary elements that make us successful.   You create the ‘art’ in the ‘Art of Hospitality’.

We wish you and yours a Happy Thanksgiving, and hope that you enjoy meaningful time with family,  friends and significant others this week.  Have a great holiday, and thank you for being part of our family.

With warm wishes,
Brooke and Patrick

The Manhattan has a blast during Housekeeping Week!

This year, Housekeeping week at the Manhattan was such a blast that we are still looking at the pictures and replaying videos. Along with the below activities we had tons of food, dessert, massages and a festive vibe all-around.

Some of the memorable activities included:

  • Toilet Paper Toss – set boxes up with holes big enough to fit a roll of paper and have associated get three in a row;
  • Room Attendant Cart Challenge – first house man to push cart full of linen around orange cones wins;
  • Wrap a Manager – wrap managers with toilet paper within a certain amount of time;
  • Obstacle Course – have associates go through an obstacle course that included vacuuming carpet, making a bed and dusting a table;
  • Kleenex Toss – Kleenex Box will be tied to associates’ waste that will have a ping pong ball and first person to shake it out wins;
  • Make a Manager up – porter will be blind folded with a room attendant directing him on how to put make up on.

As you can see from the photos and video below, our team had such a fantastic time that we cannot wait for next year.

Long Live Affinia Hotel Collection

Posted on behalf of Christian Betheuil

Step by step, experience by experience, the Affinia properties are changing from the inside out. A new Collection flag here, a new property specific key card there, they are starting to embrace their individuality and place within the Collection.

In this new chapter, Affinia is taking a step back to let the property be the center of attention. In technical terms, we are transitioning from a Brand model to a Collection model. Over the summer, Affinia hotelschitchat Affinia left behind their brand look without losing the Affinia soul – a great bed, a warm, fully appointed hotel room, a friendly staff.

While the transition is subtle, each of the small steps we take add up. Different messaging, property specific colors, and new creative on key cards all add up to bring the customer experience to the next level. This week, new DND signs have started to appear at select properties. We trust you to find and discover those touches. Similar to an impressionist painting (yes, we take ourselves seriously!), where considering a touch of paint by itself does not make sense, while taking a step back, you realize what you are looking at. The properties are building their little touches, so a whole new picture appears. Stay tuned for more communication on this evolution, especially if you are at one of the Affinia properties.

Long Live the Affinia Hotel Collection.

Yesterday we held our annual all associate event in our little known gem called Suite 2901. DJ Rob was spinning turntables and our fabulous management team and GM, were working hard on the grill. While our GM, Alex Spektor, and Director of Banquets, Franklyn Polonia competed for the “skirt-steak throw-down,” associates indulged in their well-deserved feast and danced away on the terrace! Raffle giveaways + good food + good company = ALL SMILES 🙂

Thank you to our awesome team for your hard work and commitment on a daily basis. Thank you to our management team for assisting in making this event a success. We hope everyone enjoyed the event and many more to come!

P.S.: We challenge Franklyn and Alex for another “BBQ Throw-down” simply because we all couldn’t get enough of both of your yummy steaks 🙂

ALS Ice Bucket Challenge Accepted!

In the spirit of Awareness, the Dumont has engaged in some friendly competition for a good cause.  It all started when our Guest Experience Coordinator, Abraham Rodriguez, challenged both Stephanie Fernandez (Guest Service Agent) and Juber Rahman (Bell/Door) to complete the Ice Bucket Challenge in less than 24 hours or donate $100 to ALS.  After they accepted the challenge, they nominated our very own General Manager, Jennifer Baldwin, to complete the challenge.

Guess what…challenge accepted!!

Also, even one of our VIP guests, ex-Yankee Cecil Fielder, joined in as he was nominated as well and accepted the challenge on behalf of the Dumont.
David Sandler, Glenda Maldonado, Steve Sasso…will you step up to the plate?  24 hours to go

Affinia Manhattan: Setting the Stage for a Site Inspection that Says WOW!

Affinia Manhattan houses a little known gem called Suite 2901.  This suite, sitting atop the building features a wrap-around terrace that has breathtaking views of New York City and New Jersey. With our brand new and creative team, we’ve been asking ourselves ‘What else can we do’ with Suite 2901 considering that it has so much potential? And what we came up with were ideas for a variety of events that showcase this beautiful gem. On Thursday, we hosted a site inspection with numerous planners and conference managers from the area. After they toured Affinia Manhattan and other hotels from our collection, they were very impressed with our products as well as our hospitality, sending thank you notes stating: “Thank you for sharing your beautiful hotel with us and thank you for all of the amazing hospitality.”  Thought we’d share with you some of the stunning views the planners fell in love with.

DNA helps Denihan Associates get in the 4th of July spirit!

This year again, with the help of Denihan Network Advocates, Denihan associates got in the celebratory spirit with delivered goody bags filled with U.S. flag pins and patriotic themed sweet treats including I<3 USA lollipops, cotton candy and patriotic striped mints. As you can see, everyone loved the treats and proudly displayed their patriotic pride with the flags.

In order to make this event a huge hit, a lot of people came together to make it happen – a few of them deserving very special thanks: Matt Norman-thank you, thank you for such seamless support and making this possible; Cindy Johnson-as always, she just makes things happen J; Jackie Elbaidouri-my go-to lady with her creative ideas and get-it-done spirit; and of course, Chrissy Denihan-for endlessly supporting DNA and all of our efforts! Thank you to our entire DNA team and property HRD’s who continually volunteer their time and efforts to keep our prized Denihan culture alive!

Ozzing @ A50

Yesterday the entire management team at Affinia 50 took a stroll down The Yellow Brick Road and found themselves in The Land of Oz!

The training was facilitated by Jackie Violette (HR Director), Lupe Olmos-Galasso (Director of Rooms), Linda Mo (Director of Housekeeping) and Danielle Lim (Office Manager).

The team had the opportunity to learn The Oz Principle, to brainstorm ways to be personally accountable, and to finally learn what the heck the Executive Team means when we toss around the terms “above the line” and “below the line” in our meetings!

Dumont’s Quarterly Townhall Success!

On Tuesday, the Dumont hosted it’s first Townhall Meeting of the year with our new General Manager – Jennifer Baldwin. There was a lot of built up excitement and curiosity from our staff on all the new changes and faces at the hotel. Our new Hotel Group Controller – Thomas Lyon, our new Director of Revenue Management – Barbara Brown, our new Marketing Manager – Timothy Devlin, and our new Director of Human Resources (and co-Townhall presenter) – Regina Yorio, all came by to personally meet the team. When will the snow end?? For the time being, the Affinia Dumont will not be deterred from providing the excellent service it provides because of the snow. During last week’s storm we treated our staff to lunch, on us! By the looks of how much the staff enjoyed the lunch and with the never ending snow, it looks like another lunch will be right around the corner!

Affinia Manhattan Catering & Sales Teams Celebrate a Successful 2013

Posted on behalf of Tomika Morgan, Group Sales Manager

AM Bowling Outing

The Affinia Manhattan Group and Catering Sales Teams had the opportunity to celebrate their successes over the 2013 year recently. There was so much success to go around that no one individual felt left out. Affinia Manhattan had a rough time throughout the year due to the final renovations, however, the entire team still managed to excel. Kelli Martin, Alex Spektor and Michael Newman expressed their gratitude repeatedly. And once all the kind words were said the team enjoyed three rounds of good, bad, and hilarious bowling. It would appear that the selling skills by far surpass the bowling skills for some but everyone had an amazingly fun-filled time.

Affinia Manhattan Welcomes First Snow Storm of 2014

Affinia Manhattan Welcomes First Snow Storm of 2014

The winter storm blasted the Tri-State area overnight with freezing temperatures, high winds and yes, lots of snow! It was the first snow storm of 2014-and the Affinia Manhattan teams were prepared to take it on! With some sandwiches on hand, the team enjoyed a satisfying lunch and later bundled up to clear all of the snow that had accumulated. If their warm smiles are any indication, our team definitely enjoyed this memorable day.
