The Benjamin & FIFTY NYC Holiday Party 2016

FIFTY NYC and The Benjamin had their annual holiday party yesterday, December 21st. The party was held on the entire second floor of The Benjamin which was decorated to reflect a Winter Wonderland ambience. Staff from both properties enjoyed a delicious dinner catered by our own Executive Chef Rezart and his Culinary team. There were a lot of prizes won by staff from each hotel including two 40” Smart TVs and the grand prize, a two-night stay (to include a sumptuous brunch!) at Saybrook Point Inn & Spa, a luxury property in Connecticut. To top it all off, our DJ for the night played great music and there was dancing…and lots of it!

Happy Holidays from The Benjamin and FIFTY NYC! 🙂

Fond Farewell to the Manhattan NYC…

Today is the day that Manhattan NYC departs the Denihan Collection and begins the next chapter in its storied history.

Denihan has owned and managed the hotel since 1973 – originally as the Southgate, later, Affinia Manhattan, and until today, Manhattan NYC.  Forty-three years is a long period of time for one company to own or manage a hotel – longer than many of our competitors have been in existence.  So it is with a heavy heart but an enormous amount of pride that we bid farewell to our Manhattan NYC team.

Many of you, as well as innumerable former Manhattan NYC associates, honed your ‘Art of Hospitality’ skills from the ground up at this hotel.  As our largest and most complex property, the Manhattan has not only served as a valuable training ground, but over the years created a tight-knit family of people whose lives were touched by their experiences there.  We are both proud and humbled to considered ourselves part of this group.

Looking back on the stories we collected for our 50th anniversary celebration, we saw that so many memories occurred there.  Those accounts included interactions with celebrities, sports figures, and even a glimpse of the Pope.  But as all of you know who have been on the front lines, success at the Manhattan involved tireless teams working collaboratively to care for our guests.  Manhattan NYC has built both careers and relationships.

Thank you to all who have served at Manhattan NYC.  And to those of you who will continue to serve under new management, we know this is not good-bye, but rather, ‘see you again soon’.  We extend our wishes to all for continued success.

With sincere thanks,

Brooke and Patrick

Thanksgiving at FIFTY NYC

The team at FIFTY NYC celebrated Thanksgiving with a luncheon/potluck. The staff showed off their excellent home-cooking skills and brought in a variety of their own unique, special holiday dishes for everyone to enjoy. Thanks to event organizers, Miss Teela Nakashian and Ms. Lupe Olmos-Galasso, we had deliciously prepared Thanksgiving staples as well. With good food along with great company, this was a nice way for the team to get together and celebrate the beginning of the holiday season 2016!

FIFTY NYC team, we are thankful for you every day – your efforts and dedication to our hotel are greatly appreciated! 🙂

Shelburne NYC Hosts Leader of Myanmar For 2016 UNGA

The Shelburne NYC is honored to host Aung San Suu Kyi during the 2016 UNGA. This is the first visit to the United States for Aung San Suu Kyi, the leader of Myanmar, since becoming head of her state. She arrived at the Shelburne NYC on September 16 from Washington DC, following her meeting with US president Barack Obama on Wednesday, September 14, 2016.

Aung San Suu Kyi is a Burmese statesperson, politician, diplomat and author who serves as the First and incumbent State Counsellor and Leader of the National League for Democracy. She is also the first female Minister of Foreign Affairs of Myanmar and the Minister of President’s Office in President Htin Kyaw’s Cabinet. Aung San Suu Kyi rose to prominence in the 1988 Uprisings, and became the General Secretary of the newly formed National League for Democracy (NLD). In the 1990 elections, NLD won 81% of the seats in Parliament, but the results were nullified, as the military refused to hand over power, resulting in an international outcry. She had, however, already been detained under house arrest before the elections. She remained under house arrest for almost 15 of the 21 years from 1989 to 2010, becoming one of the world’s most prominent political prisoners.

Donations from Dumont NYC

On Wednesday May 18th,  we donated 60 lockers left over from our Spa which closed a few years ago. With the help of Great Forest we located a school in Maspeth Queens, Martin Luther School, who was willing to take the lockers off of our hands. Their plan is to give the lockers a face lift so their students have a place to store their books which they currently do not have.

Wags and Wine at the Fifty NYC

To kickoff National Pet Month and highlight our VIPaws Pet Program, we hosted our first ever Wags and Wine in The Club Room at the Fifty NYC in partnership with our VIPaws charity partner, the Humane Society of NY. We invited some of our favorite adoptable furry friends (some of which even made cameos in our pet video) from the Humane Society and had some of our own Denihan pups come out for the special occasion. There was wine, snacks and of course, Jax & Bones puppy toys – all had a PAWsome time. We are so fortunate to have such a great partner in the Humane Society of New York – we loved seeing some of our favorite pups, and we can’t wait until they’re adopted. If you’re in the market for a new furry friend, you can visit the Humane Society here. Additionally, mark your calendars because everyone is invited to our next Wags and Wine on May 23rd at the Dumont NYC!

Pictured below are Mona, Milly, Caleb, Rebecca Louise and baby Gaston. The last three are up for adoption, so spread the word

Don’t forget – during National Pet Month (May), our four-legged guests stay FREE when booking a suite. Plus, our pet contest is still going strong with over 150 entries so far – make sure you share photos of YOUR pets being spoiled rotten using hashtag #VIPampered. We can’t wait to check them out!

Happy Retirement Joanie!

It was a bitter sweet moment the day Joan DiSanza announced her retirement. Joan has been a loyal and beloved member of The Denihan Family for over 26 years. At some point in our lives she’s been a leader, mentor, mother, sister or friend. We can only wish as her career comes to an end, she knows that her  influence carries on. Countless lives have been impacted through the knowledge she has imparted. Cheers to Joan’s retirement being everything she’s ever dreamed it could be.
